Before Baby Arrives—
the Risk Has Already Begun

In South Sudan, giving birth is already dangerous. And when clinics aren’t fully equipped, the outcome can change before baby ever arrives.

I didn’t understand at first. I was still thinking about what had just happened.

The silence. The questions. The weight of that room. The grief that surrounded the crib.

But as I sat there, something started to shift in how I saw that moment. Because what happened in that clinic…didn’t begin there.
It started long before.

It means that, despite their best efforts, they don’t have what they need to respond when something goes wrong.

Writing from South Sudan

In places like South Sudan, childbirth is never just about the moment of delivery. It’s about everything leading up to it.

The distance a mother has to travel.

The political instability surrounding her.

The uncertainty of whether the clinic she reaches will have what it needs.

Because the reality? Many clinics don’t.

And when a clinic isn’t fully equipped…it doesn’t mean the staff and the doctors don’t care.

It means that, despite their best efforts, they don’t have what they need to respond when something goes wrong.

That’s what I began to understand in that room.

Not every outcome is decided in the moment of labor or during the C-section.

Some outcomes are already shifting before the moment even arrives.

It’s in whether the room is ready.

It’s in whether the tools are there.

It’s in whether someone can act in time.

This is exactly why BirthAid exists.

  • To step into places like this before the mother arrives.
  • To train local birth attendants to recognize danger earlier.
  • To equip clinics with simple, lifesaving tools.
  • To make sure that when the moment comes…the room is ready.

Because what I saw that day made one thing clear: The risk doesn’t begin in the crisis. It begins long before.

As we celebrate National Baby Day this month, these babies are on our mind. We hope their stories inspire you as well, because every baby deserves a first breath.
